Side events

Through our excursion programme for chess players and company you have the chance to get to know a representative part of the glorious setting and the diversity of the region. You will also learn about the regional Easter traditions and the Carinthian culinary arts.

The price per event (guide and entry fee included) will be from € 9 to € 20. The programme may be changed if made necessary by the effect of the weather.

Monday, 6th April 2009 Guided tour through Velden and boat trip on Lake WörtherseeFrom 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Boat trip on lake Wörthersee

In the course of a one hour’s guided tour you will get acquainted with the history and architecture of Velden am Wörthersee, a small market town rich in tradition. One focus is the Schlosshotel Velden, known to countless TV viewers as “Lakeside Hotel” (the German title of the series was “Das Schloss am Wörthersee”, meaning “the palace at Lake Wörthersee”). Afterwards we make a boat trip to the romantic village Maria Wörth and then along splendid villas and marvellous hotels back to Velden. This is surely one of the best chances to experience the delightful atmosphere of Lake Wörthersee to the full.

Monday, 6th April 2009Invitation to Casino VeldenStart: 05:00 p.m.

The chess players and their company are invited to the Casino, were they will be welcomed with sparkling wine, have a guided tour through the Casino and a personal explanation of the game. Finally all participants have the chance to take part in a draw event.

Tuesday, 7th April 2009Excursion to Villach and visit of the doll museum Elli Riehl PuppenmuseumFrom 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

700 rag dolls of famous Elli Riehl represent scenes of everyday country life in a wonderful way. Each of the small dolls is a masterpiece, exquisitely crafted and dressed to perfection with clothes all sewn by Elli Riehl. Later on follows a walk through the old part of Villach, which is really worth seeing, and a visit of the fruit market.

Castle Hochosterwitz

The trip leads via Klagenfurt to the castle Hochosterwitz, which is due to its unique location one of the most impressing Austrian castle complexes. The next stop will be the small market town Gurk. The Gurk Cathedral was built in the 12th century and is one of the most important European religious buildings.

Wednesday, 8th April 2009Wörthersee film tourFrom 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

In the last 60 years a part of German film history was made around Lake Wörthersee. Stars like Hans Moser, Ingrid Bergman, Omar Sharif, Roy Black, Thomas Gottschalk, Uschi Glas and others have produced about 100 movies at the beaches of Lake Wörthersee. We take you to the authentic locations of international movies and will show the particular film clips in the bus.

The Carinthian capital is one of the Austrian towns which are particularly worth a visit. During a 90 minutes’ guided tour you learn a great deal of valuable and interesting information about monuments, squares and the history of the “town of the lindworm”.

The Carinthian “Nudl”, the national dish also known beyond the borders of the country, is a rolled out pasta dough filled with diverse delicacies. You will be offered variations of Carinthian pasta, such as Kasnudln (pasta stuffed with cheese), Fleischnudln (pasta stuffed with meat), Erdäpfelnudln (pasta stuffed with potatoes), Kletzennudln (pasta stuffed with dried pears) and there will also be a salad buffet.

Bled, venue of the Chess Olympiad 2002, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in near Slovenia. It is planned to visit the castle which is situated on the top of a rock face and which offers a marvellous panorama view. Subsequently there will be time for a walk along the lake and for a visit in a café were you should try the famous “blejske Kremsnite” (cream slice of Bled).

Keltenwelt in Frög

The mysterious period of the Halstatt culture comes back to life in the museum “Keltenwelt” in Frög. About 3000 years ago the Celts buried the bodies of their deceased with valuable burial objects under huge grave mounds. Marked paths lead along the graves to one of the biggest chieftain’s tombs.

Saturday, 11th April 2009Excursion to Turracher HöheFrom 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This excursion leads you into the impressive Carinthian mountain landscape, passing Bad Kleinkirchheim, which hosted the Alpine ski world championship. Really special is Lake Turrachsee where a part has been made useable for swimming even in winter by heating it. Also worth a visit is the alpin+art+gallery, a unique treasure chamber of nature.
